9th CYBERFEST MASTERCLASSES AT HERMITAGE MUSEUM

Address: State Hermitage, General Staff, entrance from Moika River Embankment, d. 47

November 27 at 6:30 PM

British artist Paul Malone will conduct the master class Electric Universe, during which he will talk about the role that thermodynamics plays in the morphology of objects in the contemporary astronomy to the audience without any special knowledge of astronomy or electricity.

Paul Malone will conduct a unique and controversial tour of the Universe. The artist will demonstrate photographs and video recordings of the outer space in order to present to the audience the broad array of forms that are proper to plasma structures. The talk will contain actual hypotheses about the role that thermodynamics plays in the morphology of objects in the contemporary astronomy. This theory, which is also known as the theory of electric universe and plasma cosmology, is based upon the works of members of the Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineering and it traces the history of electricity in the outer space from Birkeland, Langmuir and Jurgens to its contemporary adherents. The theory acknowledges that these views constitute a departure from The Standard Model of the Universe, but it also points out that its followers are trying to return astronomy to a more empirical and pragmatic foundation. In the theory of electric universe, the majority of objects that we see in the outer space have direct analogies at the laboratory, in ordinary industrial processes and even in the kitchen.

The talk is meant for a broad audience without any special knowledge of astronomy or electricity. However, it is believed that the talk would also be of interest to specialists in those fields.

About Paul Malone:

Paul Malone studied sculpture at the University of Reading and Royal College of Art, and he had numerous exhibitions in Great Britain and all over the world. His studio is located in the complex Art in Perpetuity Trust in Deptford (London).

The artist studied alternative, lost or unfashionable scientific theories, especially in the realm of astronomy. This proved a fascinating journey and the basis for all kinds of possibilities for imagination and a revelation in terms of the imaginative possibilities it opens up. The series of artworks associated with this thread comes within the remit of «Cosmological Conceits», the humour of which attempts to describe the cosmic and sublime in terms of assemblages of the commonplace.

The talks serve as an element of performance in this practice. They are meticulously prepared in order to create a plausible foundation for each theory. The author is also indebted to their partisans, the scientists of past and present, for an opportunity to travel in those metaphorical imaginary landscapes.

December 2 at 6:30 PM

On December 2, the workshop Future Votives of Lesser Gods will be held by the American artists. Patchen and Gannis will move participants of the master class several decades forward in time where they will look at e-waste and an opportunity to utilize it not from a point of view of today's user, but as creators of the future.

The artists Peter Patchen and Carla Gannis, Chair and Assistant Chair of the Department of Digital Arts at Pratt Institute, will offer to the master class' participants the objects that were found during an «archeological dig» at InterSteel Ltd, a St. Petersburg-based company that deals with e-waste, for the 3D scanning, processing and using for creation of a physical 3D collage. The combination and modification of e-waste will create new hybrid forms calling into question the way future generations of people (or other creatures) would perceive the obsolete technology separated from its functions.

The workshop's purpose is to create a collection of «future remains» — the votives of our secularized epoch.
